We went with our kids (7 and 10). Sarosa had blankets in the car and let them sleep until the viewpoint, then found a spot at the front where they could actually see. The 250 steps to the crater were fine for both of them, and he kept them well back from the edge. Breakfast in the village afterwards was simple and good. He also gave us honest advice against a second early morning with young children, which we followed.

Bromo is the tour everyone in East Java sells — and the one most people get wrong. Convoys of thirty jeeps, one crowded viewpoint, a rushed crater walk and back at the hotel before you have really woken up.
I do it differently because I have done it several hundred times. We leave Malang a little earlier than the convoys, I choose the viewpoint on the day (King Kong Hill or Penanjakan 1, depending on wind, cloud and how many buses I have seen on the road), and after sunrise we go the opposite way round the caldera from everyone else. You get the same famous views with far fewer people in them.
The morning is easy on the body — the jeep does the climbing — but hard on the sleep schedule. Bring layers, nap in the car, and let the sunrise wake you up properly.
If you have more time, this tour is the natural first day of the Bromo + Ijen or Bromo + Tumpak Sewu + Ijen trips: we finish here at noon and keep driving east.

Times are typical for pickup in Malang and shift with your pickup point and the season. Everything is flexible — this is my plan, not a bus schedule.

Blankets in the car, so sleep on the way. From Surabaya we leave around 23:30; from Cemoro Lawang (Probolinggo side) around 03:15.

Private cars are not allowed into the park. Your jeep is for your group only — no strangers squeezed in.

Enter Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park
We pay the park fee at the gate (cash) and start climbing through pine forest and Tenggerese villages. On clear nights, ask me to stop for the Milky Way.

Depending on the day I take you to King Kong Hill or Penanjakan 1. Hot ginger tea or coffee from a warung while the sky turns from black to indigo.

The Sea of Sand fills with mist, Bromo smokes, Semeru puffs on the horizon. I know where the light lands first — bring your phone, I'll show you the spots.

The jeep drives across the caldera floor to the foot of Bromo. From here it's a 20-minute walk (or a horse ride) to the stairs.

Questions
Frequently asked about this tour
Is the jeep really private?
Yes. One jeep for your group (up to 5–6 people). If you are a solo traveller and want to save money, tell me and I can pair you with other guests for the jeep only.
Can we hike instead of taking the jeep to the viewpoint?
Yes — from Cemoro Lawang it is a 1.5–2 hour uphill walk to King Kong Hill. Start around 03:00. I walk with you, the jeep meets us afterwards for the crater.
How cold does it get?
Between 3 and 10 °C at the viewpoint before sunrise, colder with wind. A proper jacket, hat and gloves make the difference between magic and misery. You can rent a jacket at the viewpoint if you forgot one.
Will we see Semeru?
On most dry-season mornings, yes — it sits behind Bromo and usually lets out a puff of ash every 20–30 minutes. In the rainy season it is often in cloud.
Can children or older travellers do this tour?
Yes. The jeep does the climbing; the only effort is the optional 250 steps to the crater rim, and even that can be skipped. Toddlers should stay away from the crater edge because of the sulphur.
Can we combine Bromo with Ijen?

Good tour, well organised, private jeep as advertised. Four stars only because it was a Sunday and Bromo was extremely busy at the crater, which is not the guide's fault; he had warned us and offered a weekday, but our dates were fixed. The viewpoint he chose was much quieter than the main one, and the Whispering Sands after the crowds had gone were beautiful. Sarosa is knowledgeable and speaks very good English.
