Honest guide, no drama. He told us on WhatsApp beforehand that the crater might be closed because of the gas, and it was, so we did the rim and the sunrise instead. Still a very good morning; the colour of the lake is unreal. My partner struggled on the steep part and Sarosa carried her bag and kept everyone cheerful at 3am. He arranged a trolley for her way down in about two minutes.

We did Bromo and Ijen with Sarosa over two days in June. He picked us up in Malang at 00:30 as promised, drove us to a viewpoint where there were maybe fifteen people instead of the crowd we later saw on the main platform, and knew exactly where to stand for the light. At Ijen the fire was small that night, and he had told us beforehand that this might happen, which we appreciated more than a sales pitch. Very organised, easy to talk to, and the hotel in Banyuwangi was clean.

We only had one free day from Malang and chose Tumpak Sewu. Left at five, at the viewpoint by seven with almost nobody there. The way down is steep and slippery and I was nervous on the ladders, but Sarosa and the local guide from the base were patient and told me where to put my feet. Standing under that wall of water was worth every step. Back in Malang for a late lunch.

We went with our kids (7 and 10). Sarosa had blankets in the car and let them sleep until the viewpoint, then found a spot at the front where they could actually see. The 250 steps to the crater were fine for both of them, and he kept them well back from the edge. Breakfast in the village afterwards was simple and good. He also gave us honest advice against a second early morning with young children, which we followed.

Back in Bali now and still talking about Sukamade. The truck ride through the rivers was an adventure by itself, the guesthouse was basic as you said, and at 21:00 the rangers found a green turtle laying, so we watched in red light for almost an hour. Releasing the hatchlings in the morning was our favourite moment of the whole trip. Thanks for being honest that nothing was guaranteed; it made seeing it better.

Hi Sarosa, just wanted to say thank you for this morning. The market at Oro-Oro Dowo, the bakso, Toko Oen, that warm ginger thing (ronde?) — we ate for four hours and it cost less than one dinner at home. Loved that these were places you actually eat at yourself. Malang has been the highlight of Java for us.

Five days with Sarosa through the quieter side of East Java: B29 instead of the Bromo crowd, Ranu Pani, Kawah Wurung, the coffee plantations at Kalibaru and the Osing village near Banyuwangi. Well planned, flexible when the rain came, and I learned a lot about Tengger life. One star off only because two of the hotels were weaker than the rest of the trip, which he took on board straight away. Recommended for anyone who has already seen the famous spots.

Solo traveller, booked two days before by WhatsApp. Pickup at midnight in Banyuwangi, mask and headlamp handed over in the car, and Sarosa walked at my pace up the steep part without making me feel slow. We went into the crater around 03:00 and saw the blue fire clearly for maybe twenty minutes before the wind changed. Sunrise over the lake is the part I keep thinking about. Fair price for a private tour.

Good tour, well organised, private jeep as advertised. Four stars only because it was a Sunday and Bromo was extremely busy at the crater, which is not the guide's fault; he had warned us and offered a weekday, but our dates were fixed. The viewpoint he chose was much quieter than the main one, and the Whispering Sands after the crowds had gone were beautiful. Sarosa is knowledgeable and speaks very good English.

Three days, three very early mornings, and honestly the best part of our month in Indonesia. Tumpak Sewu was the surprise: the climb down is proper work (bamboo ladders, a river, everything wet) but the base of the falls is worth it. Sarosa managed the whole thing quietly, sorted the ferry to Bali at the end and even messaged us the next day to check we had arrived. Would book again without thinking about it.

I have done a lot of guided trips and this was one of the better run ones. The timing is tight by design (Bromo sunrise, a six-hour drive, Ijen at 2am the next night) and Sarosa managed it without ever seeming rushed. He explained the miners' work in a way that stuck with me: 70 to 90 kilos on their shoulders, twice a day. The car was comfortable and the driver careful on the mountain roads. The ferry to Bali at the end went exactly as planned.

We added Baluran after Ijen and it was the right call. Sarosa picked us up at 15:00, an hour later we were on the Bekol savanna with deer everywhere and peacocks calling, then Bama beach with monkeys at sunset. It is not Africa, but for Java it feels properly wild. He knew when the animals come to the water and where to stand on the watchtower.
