We did Bromo and Ijen with Sarosa over two days in June. He picked us up in Malang at 00:30 as promised, drove us to a viewpoint where there were maybe fifteen people instead of the crowd we later saw on the main platform, and knew exactly where to stand for the light. At Ijen the fire was small that night, and he had told us beforehand that this might happen, which we appreciated more than a sales pitch. Very organised, easy to talk to, and the hotel in Banyuwangi was clean.

Overview
Two volcanoes in two mornings: sunrise over the Bromo caldera by jeep, a 6-hour drive east, then the night hike to Ijen's blue fire and crater lake. Private car, one hotel night, drop-off at the ferry to Bali.

This is the trip most people write to me about, and for good reason: the two volcanoes everyone comes to East Java for, in the right order, ending at the ferry to Bali. Sunrise at Bromo, a long drive east, a hotel bed for a few hours, then up Ijen in the dark.
I will not pretend it is restful. You get two very early mornings and about six hours in the car between them. What makes it work is that everything in between is taken care of — the jeep is waiting in Tumpang, the car comes round to Cemoro Lawang, the hotel knows we arrive at four and leave at midnight. You just sleep whenever you can.
The shared-minibus version of this route exists and it is cheaper. It also means a dozen strangers, fixed viewpoints and a fixed clock. With me you leave a little earlier, stand where the light is, go down into the Ijen crater at your own pace and get dropped at the ferry, the airport or the station — whichever your onward plan needs.

Itinerary
2 days, hour by hour
Times are typical for pickup in Malang and shift with your pickup point and the season. Everything is flexible — this is my plan, not a bus schedule.
Day 1 Bromo sunrise, drive east

Pickup from your hotel in Malang
Blankets in the car, so sleep on the way. From Surabaya we leave around 23:30 the evening before and go via Probolinggo; from Probolinggo station around 02:00; from Cemoro Lawang around 03:15.

Switch to the 4×4 jeep in Tumpang
Private cars are not allowed into the park. Your jeep is for your group only. While we are at Bromo, the driver takes the car round to Cemoro Lawang on the Probolinggo side, so we can leave the park eastwards without backtracking.

Into Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park
Park fee at the gate (cash), then up through pine forest and Tenggerese villages. On clear nights I stop for the Milky Way.

Viewpoint, coffee, warm up
King Kong Hill or Penanjakan 1 — I choose on the day, depending on wind, cloud and how many buses I have seen. Hot ginger tea or coffee from a warung while it is still dark and 3–10 °C.

Sunrise over the caldera
Mist fills the Sea of Sand, Bromo smokes, Semeru puffs on the horizon. I know where the light lands first.

Sea of Sand and the crater rim
The jeep crosses the caldera floor to the foot of Bromo. A 20-minute walk (or a horse ride) to the stairs, then 250 steps up to look straight into the crater.

Whispering Sands and the Teletubbies savanna
The black sand field and the green hills on the south side — usually empty by now. Then the jeep takes us out to Cemoro Lawang, where the car is waiting.

Drive east to Banyuwangi
About 6 hours with stops: down to Probolinggo, then the coast road through Situbondo, past Baluran National Park to Banyuwangi. Lunch on the way — grilled fish at Pasir Putih beach if the timing works. Sleep as much as you can; the alarm tomorrow is at midnight.

Check in, dinner, and bed by 19:00 if you can manage it. A standard double room in Banyuwangi, about an hour from the Ijen trailhead; ask me if you want something nicer.
Day 2 Ijen blue fire, on to Bali

One hour of winding road up through Licin and the plantations to Paltuding. Blankets in the car; sleep a bit more.

Paltuding: coffee, gear, gate
Coffee or ginger tea at the warung, headlamps and gas masks handed out, park fee at the counter. The gate opens between 01:00 and 02:00 depending on the season.

Hike up to the rim
3 km, 1.5–2 hours, steep for the first 2 km. Sulphur miners come down past us with 70–90 kg in their baskets. If you cannot walk it, locals push 'trolley' carts up for IDR 800,000–1,200,000 return.

Down to the blue fire
If the rangers open the descent: 30–45 minutes down a steep, rocky path with masks on, to where sulphur gas burns blue at the vents. Natural, and not guaranteed — on smoky nights it is faint, and if the gas is bad we watch from the rim.

Back on the rim, the turquoise lake appears out of the dark — nearly a kilometre across, pH about 0.5. Steam drifts off the far shore. Hot tea from the vendors.

Walk down, back to the car
About an hour and a quarter down in daylight, with views over the plantations to Banyuwangi and the Bali Strait. At Paltuding by 07:30, then down the mountain.

Drop-off: Ketapang ferry, airport or station
The ferry to Gilimanuk takes 45 minutes and runs around the clock; from there it is 3–4 hours by car to Ubud or Seminyak, and I can arrange a driver. Or Banyuwangi airport (BWX) and the train station for Surabaya or Yogyakarta.

Day 1 is easy (jeep, short walks, 250 steps to the Bromo rim); day 2 is a 3 km hike up to the Ijen rim in the dark plus the optional steep crater descent — on very little sleep.
Best season
April to October for the clearest sunrises and the best chance of the blue fire. Possible year-round; in the rainy season I watch the weather, build in a buffer and tell you honestly what to expect.
What to bring
- Warm layers for both mornings — jacket, hat, gloves; it is 3–10 °C at the Bromo viewpoint and windy on the Ijen rim
- Closed shoes with grip — the same pair does the Bromo dust and the Ijen rock
- A small daypack for the Ijen hike
- Cash in IDR — roughly IDR 400,000–600,000 per person covers both park fees plus meals, depending on weekday or weekend
- Passport for hotel check-in
- Power bank, earplugs and an eye mask for sleeping in the car and the early hotel night
- Sunscreen and sunglasses for after sunrise on both days
Questions
Frequently asked about this tour
Is two days really enough for both volcanoes?
Yes, if you accept the sleep deficit. The two volcanoes are a 6-hour drive apart, so the day between them is mostly road. If you want it slower, add a night in Cemoro Lawang before Bromo, or take the 3-day version with Tumpak Sewu, which gives you a proper night before each volcano.
How much sleep will we get, honestly?
Night 1: whatever you manage in the car between 00:30 and 03:00, plus a nap on the drive east. Night 2: the hotel from about 19:00 to 23:30, so 4 hours if you are disciplined. It is a tiring 36 hours; almost everyone says it was worth it, and almost everyone sleeps on the ferry.
Where do we sleep?
A standard hotel in Banyuwangi, about an hour from the Ijen trailhead — clean double room, hot shower, breakfast. If you would like something with a pool or a view, tell me and I quote the difference; there are a few nice places on the road up towards Licin.
Can we do it the other way round, from Bali?
Yes. I meet you at the Ketapang ferry, we do Ijen the first night, drive west, sleep near Bromo, do the sunrise on the second morning and I drop you in Surabaya, Malang or Probolinggo by early afternoon. Same price, same nights.
What if the sunrise is clouded out or the blue fire does not show?
It happens, more in the rainy season than in the dry. I cannot refund the weather, but I can move things: a different viewpoint at Bromo, the crater walk in cloud (still worth it), watching the fire from the rim if the descent is closed. Ijen occasionally closes completely for volcanic activity; then I tell you the moment I know and we replan together.
Can we get to Ubud or Seminyak the same day?
Yes. Off the ferry in Gilimanuk around 12:00 Java time — Bali is one hour ahead, so 13:00 there — and then 3–4 hours by car to Ubud, Canggu or Seminyak. I can arrange a driver on the Bali side who waits at the port.

The timing is tight by design (Bromo sunrise, a six-hour drive, Ijen at 2am the next night) and Sarosa managed it without ever seeming rushed. He explained the miners' work in a way that stuck with me: 70 to 90 kilos on their shoulders, twice a day. The car was comfortable and the driver careful on the mountain roads.
